The Final Push

23rd September

We woke up feeling nervous and excited about the day ahead of us. We had 45-50 miles to go until we reached the Mexican border so we packed up the tent and loaded the bikes for the final time feeling a little sadness. We set off around 10am into one of the hottest days that we had experienced. The ride was a challenging one which took us through cities for most of the day which were poorly sign posted and very stop start. We reached Downtown San Diego for lunchtime and ate next to a WW2 aircraft carrier.

After some more exhausting cycling over some of the worst roads our bikes had experienced we neared the border about 3.30pm and found the final bike path that would take us all the way to the border. With only 500 feet to go we were horrified to see that there was construction work on the bike path that barred us from going any further. We stood there in silence not quite sure if this was it. A massive anti climax and an odd feeling of numbness washed over me as we took a couple of photo’s. I then saw another route that pedestrians took which would bypass the construction work and get us right next to the border so we back tracked and meandered down to the border crossing. We leaned our bikes up against the mesh fence next to the stream of Mexicans that were filing through the barriers and congratulated each other on a job well done. This time I felt much happier and we were both grinning from ear to ear as we took photo’s of each other after achieving a pretty good accomplishment. We hung around the border area for half hour soaking up the sun and relaxing on a bench. We still had 15-20 miles to ride back to San Diego where we were booked into a hostel for the night. The ride back was nice but we were mentally and physically exhausted from the day and just wanted a warm shower and some food. We arrived at the hostel in Downtown sometime after 6pm, had a massive meal and some cold drinks. We were both so tired that we didn’t even feel like a beer and just caught a movie at a cinema.

Mileage : 66 miles

Mood : Elated and relieved
